February brings “The Girl on the Boat”

The Girl on the Boat

Angie says, “Our next reading selection is:  Girl on the Boat  / also called Three Men and a Maid (1921). The next meeting is 4th Tuesday of February — Feb. 28, 7pm.” Location will be made clear closer to the date via the Northwodes email list, or by request.

To which Maria follows up, “For those who like to carry entire libraries in their pockets (as I do in my iPhone), do check out the Project Gutenberg files:   http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/20717 You may download it in a number of formats; or read it online; or find it collected in The Best Known Works of PG Wodehouse (rather a misleading title– unless one were to add “which are in the Public Domain”) via Kindle.”

Kris adds to the plethora of choices: there’s a free audiobook version at  http://librivox.org/the-girl-on-the-boat-by-p-g-wodehouse/ . Of course there are multiple print and audiobook versions for purchase as well.

Couldn’t be easier to do the pleasant prep for this congenial gathering!

Bring on the cheese curls!

The Northwodes’ Combined Holiday Party and Book Discussion will start at 6 pm, Saturday, December 17, in Bloomington (MN). Contact the Northwodes’ extensive staff to RSVP or get more details.

Bring On the Girls book cover

Angie announced that December’s book is “Bring On the Girls!” This will be our first foray into the autobiographical writings (“semi-autobiographical,” according to wikipedia, and not just because Guy Bolton is a co-author). It’s included in “Wodehouse on Wodehouse,” if you have/get a copy of that.

Wodehouse in song! and on CD!

Maria Jette and Dan Chouinard gave a knock-out performance of songs for which Wodehouse wrote the lyrics at the TWS convention in Detroit on Oct. 15–a very fitting way to celebrate the 130th anniversary of PGW’s birth! Also an auspicious day for the release of the CD, which is now available for order (at least in the U.S.; the rest of the world to be accommodated shortly):

“Our Little Paradise: Songs of PG Wodehouse” by Maria Jette (soprano) and Dan Chouinard (piano)
One CD $15 USD; Two $25; Three $30

Songs in Paradise

Maria Jette and Dan Chouinard perform Wodehouse songs at Walter LibraryRemember the great performance of songs with Wodehouse lyrics at the 2009 TWS convention? Maria Jette and Dan Chouinard are back with even more, destined for a CD. They previewed several numbers, by turns rollicking and lovely, at an August 7 “concertlette” sponsored by the University of Minnesota Libraries and Friends of the Libraries.

Boat Race Night 2011

The annual aquatic contest between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge took place on Saturday, 26 March 2011, and the Northwodes celebrated Oxford’s win appropriately that evening. Gathering at the Happy Gnome, browsing and sluicing was enjoyed by all, and only one policeman’s helmet was subject to purloining.  (See “Carry On, Jeeves”, ch 7, for relevant text.)
